27 Imagination Game - Learn English

The Imagination Game

This is a fascinating and entertaining game that you can play with your friends, and have a great laugh. First of all though, you should try it for yourself so that you fully understand how it works. There are five questions. You need to relax, and make short notes about what you see in your imagination. There is a key at the end that explains it all, but don’t look at it yet, or you will spoil it for yourself. Okay, let’s get started.

1. You are walking along in the countryside, and you see a wood (some trees together). There is a path, so you walk into the wood. What is it like? Is it large or small? Is it dark or light? What can you see? How do you feel? Make notes.

2. You follow the path, and you come to some water. Describe it. Is it a stream, river, pond or lake? Can you see anything in it? Is it deep, shallow, clear or murky? How do you feel? What do you do? Make notes.

3. You leave the water, walk on, and you come to a house. Describe it. Is it large or small? What color is it? Anybody there? Make notes.

4. You leave the house, and on the path you find a key. Describe it. What is it made of? How big? Color etc. What do you do with it? Make notes.

5. Finally, you come to a barrier (something that stops you going further). Describe it. Is it a wall? What is it made of? How big is it? Can you see what is on the other side? What do you do? Make notes.

A car that runs on air? Yes please!
As fuel prices continue to rise so does the cost of living. It is clearly a time for all of us to search for new ways to save energy. The car maker Peugeot has developed a new car, the Hybrid Air.
The idea of a hybrid car that uses two types of fuel is not new. However, most other manufacturers are developing cars that use petrol and electricity. These have some drawbacks as they need to carry heavy, expensive and possibly dangerous batteries. The Hybrid Air, using petrol and compressed air, has many advantages. The power system can be fitted into a standard car body and does not increase weight very much. Also, it produces compressed air and stores it in a tank all by itself whilst driving. The best thing is though that these cars will decrease fuel bills by nearly 50 percent.
A car that runs on air sounds like a dream for the future, doesn't it? But it is real. Peugeot has had a team of 100 scientists and engineers working in secret on the air-powered engine for over two years. They expect the first Peugeot 208 Hybrid Air to be on the market by 2016, costing $1300 less than popular electric hybrids.

The Psychology of flowers - Learn English crossword
Everybody loves flowers; they are so pretty with their intense and pure colors. The color of the flower you like says much about your character. White means purity, innocence and a liking of simple things. If you like yellow, then you have drive and imagination. You also make a good friend. Red is for passion and enthusiasm, but you may be impulsive sometimes. Love pink, and it suggests you are gentle and warm, though you do need to be taken care of. Blue means you are a very careful person and you don’t act without considering everything first.
Myths about flowers
Of course, it is not just the colors that have meanings. In folklore many flowers have a story behind them. Take, for example, the daffodil. An ancient Greek story tells of a handsome but vain young man called Narcissus, who stared at his own reflection in a pool endlessly. He was so obsessed by his own beauty that he did not notice that a young lady, by the name of Echo, was madly in love with him. Eventually, she faded away until only her voice was left. The Gods became angry about this and turned Narcissus into a daffodil, who would always sit by a pool nodding at his reflection.

Just had to include these electric flowers I found in a junk shop. I think they were produced in the 1960s or 70s. They have to be the ultimate in artificial flowers!

24 Cycle Power - Learn English Games

Bicycles first appeared around 1820. The first ones were made of wood and had no pedals. You simply pushed yourself along with your feet, so they were called running machines. It was still much faster than walking. Later pedals were added to increase speed, and the rest is history, as they say. We can see bicycles everywhere we go because they are fun, practical and economical.
It is not surprising that this invention has remained so popular over the years. For most people, it is their first experience of personal transport. Kids learn to ride at a very early age and often keep riding all their lives. They go to school, go to work, carry the family, go shopping, or just enjoy a ride around the town or countryside. All this can be achieved with no fuel costs or pollution and keeps you fit.
I was surfing the Internet the other day and I came across a fascinating story about a charity called Re-cycle. They collect abandoned bicycles and send them to developing countries where they have an incredibly positive effect on people’s lives.
I think this is a great project and shows how the most humble form of transport is an outstanding life changing force.

Fishing is a very popular pastime. All over the world millions of people get out along the rivers, around the lakes and on the sea, to try to catch those elusive creatures, fish. Of course, most fishermen want to catch fish for food, but some are just happy to get out of the city, and enjoy the peace of nature. Cast the baited hook out and relax, see what happens. If the fish are hungry, they will bite.
Trying to catch fish can also be very exciting. There you are chilling out, enjoying the natural beauty, when suddenly you get a bite. Time for action! Everything goes into another mode. How big is it? How fast can I get it in without breaking the line? How can I land it? So many questions have to be answered very quickly, if you are going to catch that fish.
Sea fishing is something else. You can never really know what you might pull in, so it is not relaxing at all. There are all kinds of strange things down there, so you have to be a bit careful as some of them are poisonous and have stings. Sharks have very big teeth and are not very friendly, so a great deal of skill and knowledge is necessary when handling them. When fishing in the sea, you should certainly consider one of my favorite mottoes, “Expect the unexpected.” To show you what I mean, just watch this video of people fishing from the porch of their house on the inter-coastal waterway of Louisiana, USA. Funny stuff! Not so difficult to catch what the lady is saying.

22 Internet Shopping - Learn English Games

Internet shopping is becoming more and more popular these days. We can save hours of walking around the town trying to find the things we want to buy. Comparing prices easily can also save us lots of money. The online stores often buy things on a massive scale, so they are able to offer good discounts to their customers. Before you get your credit card out though, you need to be aware of some possible dangers. However, if you shop at larger stores, and make sure your passwords are strong, you should be okay.
One of my favorite places to shop is Amazon. It is fantastic for books, DVDs and music. You can also find great deals on all sorts of goods there, and the shipping fees are very reasonable. They also deliver to your door, which is particularly convenient when you are buying something big, like a bed. Getting the size right for clothes can be a bit tricky, but if you hate shopping like me, it is worth the risk.
Of course, there are still many people who love to shop on the high street or in malls with their friends, making a social event of it. That’s fine if you like that kind of thing. Personally though, it is Internet first for me, and trudging around the shops as a last resort.

Gardening, a slow and gentle pastime that appeals to the aged, or is it? Most people like plants and greenery. In Japan, city people go out into the park or countryside for a green shower. It makes you feel fresh and in touch with nature again. Many people don’t know the names of the plants, and where they come from. It is enough that they are green and sometimes have pretty flowers.

It was a surprise for me when I became a gardener. I had not really planned to, but I wanted to surround my cave house in Spain with a nice garden. The most difficult thing was deciding what kind of plants to grow, and where to plant them. They all have their different needs for sun, water, temperature and altitude. I looked around the local area to see what people were growing, and asked for their advice. I soon realized was that I was totally ignorant on the topic. I didn’t even know the names of the trees and bushes they told me about and had to make notes.

Sometimes I would research on the Internet to find more information about a plant or tree. It was then that I realized that I was standing just outside a massive world that I would never be able to fully understand, botany, the science of plants. Some people spend their whole lives studying it, and there are always new things to learn. It is fascinating, wonderful, and as endless as the universe. Some plants however, for example the yucca, are very strong and easy to grow, so there is hope even for a chancy gardener like me.

The flowers below need no water, though they do need electricity. I call them power flowers. They are a bit squeaky, but quite pretty in their own way. I found them in a junk shop near Tokyo.

When you tell people you live in a cave house, it often brings a smile to their faces. It is not long before the caveman jokes follow. They imagine a small dark space that is just one step up from camping. I don’t mind this as I know that modern caves are, in so many ways, superior to traditional houses. In Granada, and many other areas of Spain, there are cave houses that are hundreds of years old. The way that the mountains were formed, and the type of stone makes them particularly suitable for caves. When making a new cave the land must be carefully chosen. Experienced cave diggers look for a hard layer of rock that will serve as a strong roof and dig below it. The ceilings are arched to add more strength so the finished structure is very strong, safe and beautiful. The common dangers to normal houses, such as fire and storms, are much less of a problem to a cave.
It is true that many people make caves with six or eight bedrooms. It is just a case of digging deeper into the hillside. I decided to keep mine quite simple though. It only has two bedrooms and each room has a big window so the whole place is very light and airy.
The best thing of all though, is the way a cave will protect you from extreme weather. In winter when the temperature goes right down, the cave will be 10 degrees higher inside, so it is quite easy to keep warm with a small wood-burning stove. On the other hand, in the heat of the summer the cave is 10 degrees cooler, and always feels comfortable. When you walk into the cave, from the blazing heat outside, it feels like it is air-conditioned. Living in a cave is not only eco-friendly saving lots of fuel, but is also very quiet, calm and peaceful.

A dog is a man’s best friend, so the saying goes. Mankind’s relationship with dogs goes back thousands of years. They have been used for hunting, herding, guarding, and kept as pets. It is no surprise that they are one of the most popular pets as they are so faithful and entertaining. Sometimes things can go badly wrong though, and then a dog can become a major problem. If they start destroying the house or even attacking people, something must be done.
If you live in Los Angeles, you can call Cesar Millan, the dog whisperer. What he can do with problem dogs is truly magical. Of course, there is no magic about it. Cesar has a deep understanding of dog psychology, and this allows him to communicate with them very well. He says that many of the problems come from the owners using the wrong body language, or doing things in the wrong way. For example, dogs can be leaders or followers. If you let a dog walk through the door before you, you are telling it that it can be the leader. That is not so good, if you want to keep control of your dog, you need to be the leader. Cesar trains the owners and rehabilitates the dogs. The great thing is that he has made lots of TV shows and video podcasts, so if you would like to learn more have a look at his website or on Wikipedia. 18 I Smell A Rat - Learn English Games

They say that, in any major city, you are never more than two meters away from a rat. In most countries they are the enemy because they are so dirty and spread diseases. People try to get rid of them with poison and traps, but it doesn’t stop the nasty things, they just keep on coming back. They seem to enjoy living along with humans because we provide them with so much tasty food in the things we throw away.
In some countries though unsuspecting travelers might be shocked and horrified to find themselves eating rat by mistake. Deep fried in batter, it looks very similar to fried chicken. In some parts of Asia and South America, it is quite a common food.
Some people like rats very much and keep them as pets. I must admit the one in the picture above does look cute. The military in some countries train them to find land mines as they have a very keen sense of smell.

17 Invention Racket - Learn English Games

Thomas Edison February 11th, 1848 - October 18th, 1931. What a supremely creative, imaginative and inventive person. He was a true hero. Most people know about his famous inventions, but there are hundreds more. It is truly remarkable how inventions have changed our lives over the centuries. A simple thing we all take for granted like soap, changed the world from being awfully smelly place to, well, a less smelly place. These days are so exciting too, with the new digital and Nano technologies. I remember the first time I saw a TV remote control. I was totally amazed and fascinated by it. And, don’t forget how massive the first video cameras were, and expensive. Now they are tiny and cheap, built in as a second thought feature of a cellphone. The first cell phones people called bricks because they were the same size as a house brick, and just as heavy. It makes me laugh now, but at the time, I was impressed by the very idea of mobile communication.

The other topic of course is tennis, now that the summer season is upon us. I love that word racket because it has so many different meanings. Check it out in your dictionary, and how I played with it in the new show, Tennis Racket...

Animal art is becoming quite popular around the world. One might expect that monkeys would be the most likely species to become painters, but that is not the case at all. Many different kinds of animals are producing artworks. From little frogs to huge elephants are getting in on the act. Zoo’s find that auctioning the painting can be a very useful source of extra funds, which can be used to improve the animals living conditions. The paintings often sell for hundreds, or even thousands of dollars. Tillie, an abstract expressionist Jack Russell terrier from New York has done many solo exhibitions around the world. It has just occurred to me that you probably think I am making all this up. Well, I assure you I am not! What a strange and wonderful world we live in! There’s nothing like a bit of sunshine is there? You don’t really need to be a scientist to know that sunny weather makes people feel happier. However, scientists in Canada did a lot of research and found some very interesting things. Natural light has an amazing and positive effect on us all. Students in sunny classrooms do better in tests, and are absent from school much less. Children even grow taller if they have lots of natural light. Shoppers spend more money in stores with natural light instead of electric light. Workers in sunny offices are much more productive and don’t take so many sick days off. Dr. Zane Kime wrote a book called Sunlight. In his book, he advises that we get out in the sun, as it gives us energy and keeps us healthy. Keep the curtains open and let the sun shine in.

David Blaine is a great street magician and illusionist. He is famous for his death defying tricks and stunts. He has been buried alive for seven days. He has been hung in a glass box over London for 44 days without food. One of his coolest stunts in New York was called Frozen In Time. Blocks of ice were placed around him trapping him inside for over sixty-three hours. Thousands of his fans encouraged him to keep going with signs. Finally, he signaled that he wanted to get out and the ice was broken open. Later he said that he thought he had died in there. He recovered in hospital, but it was a whole month before he could walk properly again. He has a really cool website too!
The other topic in these puzzles is house and home, much more comfortable and warm. On the other hand, if you would like to live in a really cool place, how about an igloo?

13 Inventing Celebrity Pets - Learn English Games

As you have probably guessed, there are three topics mixed up in these puzzles. One is the story of a cat called Robbie in Germany. He turned on the faucet in the bathroom by accident. The bath overflowed and water ran through the ceiling. The owners rushed down into the basement to rescue their books and papers. Unfortunately, they left their dinner cooking on the stove and it caught fire. The house was destroyed leaving the couple homeless. What a disaster. Luckily nobody was injured, and the couple forgave Robbie.
Talking about inventions: that Leonardo fellow was way ahead of his time. He lived from 1452 to 1519, and is most famous for his paintings. However, in the last few decades people have come to realize his true genius. He had the idea of building helicopters and tanks hundreds of years ago. Above is a picture he drew to show the proportions of the human body. Check this out!

12 Festive Fashion - Learn English Games

The fashion world is a fascinating place. The unique designs that cost a fortune, seen at private shows in London, Paris and New York have a strong influence on the clothes appearing in the shops for us to enjoy. Ji Haye from Korea is very famous for her colorful designs using traditional Korean material. She has had great success showing her work alongside names like Chanel and Dior.
Things were not so easy for her at first though. As a teenager, she was confused and went from subject to subject at universities in Seoul and Japan. Then, she went to a fashion school and realized that fashion was for her. Eager to find success she set off for Paris. She worked very hard under other designers learning all the time. One day she received an invitation to put on a show of her own work in Paris. It took her a year to prepare for the show as there was nobody to help her. All the hard work paid off though, and the show was a massive hit. The fashion world is very competitive, and it is difficult to stay on top. Ji once said it was like standing on the edge of a cliff. Check out this show, wonderful!
The other topic is festivals. There are thousands of them all over the world, but one that never fails to capture the imagination is The Day Of The Dead. It is held in Mexico on November 2nd. It looks a bit frightening, but everyone has a great time.

11 Sightseeing and forehead ads - Learn English Games

Advertising gets everywhere these days. On the positive side, it can be colorful, entertaining and informative. On the other hand, it can be very noisy and intrusive. When you are watching TV, they interrupt the program and repeat the same commercial again and again. That is the worst for me. In London, an advertising agency came up with a unique idea to take advertising to a new level by placing ads on people’s foreheads. They hired young attractive people, mostly students, to hang out in crowded areas, local cafes and clubs. Most people had strong opinions about it; some laughed and some were disgusted. It was quite a good promotional stunt really. The ads were not tattoos, by the way, they could be washed off later on, after work. 10 My memory has gone to the wall - Learn English Games

Hearing that the number of people living alone was rising in Germany, Suzanne Schmidt thought that they might feel lonely. Then, she came up with a great idea. Make life size pictures or wallpaper of friends and loved ones, to hang on the wall. She developed the idea and marketed it. It was a big hit with single people in Germany and couples living apart. The creator Susanne says that they have many advantages over real people as they are very well behaved. They don’t annoy you by making noise and messing up the place. There are never any arguments about which program to watch on TV either. By far though the best thing is, if you fall out with your two dimensional companion, you can just tear him or her down and hang somebody else up there instead!

The creator of the world famous Harry Potter stories, J. K. Rowling, is probably one of the most successful English writers of our time. Her books have sold over 400 million copies, and are enjoyed by people all over the world. She is now one of the richest people in Britain. Her life may be thought of as a classic “rags to riches” story as things have not always been so good for her. Her mother died when she was fifteen. A few years later she had a child, but soon after her marriage broke up. As a single mother she was very poor and, living on government benefits, became depressed. All at once the idea for Harry Potter came into her head. She was very excited and started writing. It was not easy to get published, but she kept on trying. They eat lots of healthy vegetables and seafood. Life in Okinawa is slow, so life is not too stressful. They don’t spend so much time watching TV, and prefer to be outdoors in the garden.

Surfing could not be called a relaxing activity. It can be very dangerous too. Jens Eventyr was swept out to sea by strong currents and a sudden storm. He held on to his surfboard all night and got very seasick. The waves were four meters high and were taking him further out to sea. He began to think he couldn’t hold on any longer and would drown. Fortunately, the wind changed, and he was able to catch a wave that took him back to the shore. What an amazing survival story!

Earthships are really amazing places to live in. They are of course much cheaper to build than conventional houses. It is surprising what can be achieved with useless things that have been thrown away. Tires are fantastic for building walls, and bottles are perfect for making windows. Often these buildings are much better as they provide more insulation from very cold and very hot weather, it is like natural air conditioning. Living in one that is solar and wind powered is a real education. It really teaches you how to save power. If you use your hair drier in the morning, you may run out of power at night and have no lights. In the city, we waste so much power. I think everyone should experience living this way.

Ang Lee never really fitted into the expectations people had for him. His father was the principal of a high school, but Ang was not good at studying. His mind was on other things. He disappointed his parents, but he followed his dream to make movies. He did have hard times, but that is life, and you have to be strong and struggle for what you believe in. Sometimes you may think that your dream is impossible, but if you try and are sincere, people will come to help you. You have to go and get your dream. Nobody will bring it to you. 3 Information age - Learn English Games

I think many people, including myself, feel a lot of nostalgia when thinking about how the world was before the information age. Life was simple and much less stressful. You might get really excited when a traveling salesman came to town. You could find out what was going on in the outside world. These days of course, we just get on the computer and do a search. The world seems to get smaller and words like “Global Village” are in common use.
The Amish people of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania have chosen to live their lives without all the modern devices we use without a thought every day. Can’t quite see myself, Justin Time, living like that. I would have to change my name to Lostin Time.
They have a rule that married men are not allowed to shave there beards. I don’t think I could stand that, so I would have to stay single! There is a lot of information about the Amish on the Internet and some great pics. If you click on the picture above you can read all about their history and customs.

Sabriye Tenberken is a most extraordinary person. She lost her sight at the age of 13. Now just stop, close your eyes and think how your life would be without being able to see. It is very frightening just to imagine. Sabriye did not let it stop her from living an amazingly full and inspiring life. She has done so much to help other people too. I admire her courage; she is a true hero. She has a strong connection with Tibet, so I used the picture of a mandala carpet, right, for this page. It is beautiful and fascinating. Dennis Tito the millionaire was the first person to pay for a sightseeing trip to space. He spent eight days up there in orbit around the Earth. In 2001, the Californian millionaire spent 20 million dollars to visit space the international station, Alpa. He had to spend six months training for the trip, but he was very enthusiastic about going. He particularly enjoyed being weightless and singing Beatles songs with his Russian companions. Going into space must have been an incredible experience. It’s not everybody’s cup of tea though, is it? I mean, if someone asked me if I wanted to go, my first question would be about the toilets on the space station. I could not bear to wear a diaper for a week, so for me it would be, no thanks. How about you?
